This is a story about Windows XP. Its true, but the names have been
changed to protect the innocent.

I'm just going to string myself up.

I just spent the last 3 hours getting an XP machine to see the
wireless card again.
About two weeks ago, for no apparent reason, the wireless network just
stopped working, so I put the guy on a wired network and forgot about it.

Today, he comes to my desk and says, "so, am I going to get wireless
again, soon?"
I said, "probably not. I'm not really working on it"
This shocked him. He said he thought the wired fix was only temporary.

I said, "It is temporary - eventually you'll get a new machine".

So we sparred back and forth like this, and he eventually got tired and left.

Then I get an e-mail that says he wants it fixed.
So I walked over to his machine and without even asking him,
I applied service pack 1.

BOOM. BLACK SCREEN.
nothing
dead

I am the bastard operator from hell

Ready for the kicker?

I popped in the wireless card, went back to my desk and was able to
ping the box.

So I said, "there! Its fixed."

I think he was going to cry.

I should have told him the black screen was a security feature so that
nobody could read over his shoulder?
